The proposal for a new Gallery of Contemporary Arts continues the flow of urban space in, around and through the new complex. a wide public route traverses the site making a covered plaza beside the river to the south and the market place to teh east. The gallery spaces are consequently elevated to the first floor. These are reached, in stages, by a broad, gently sloping stair. The sequence is influenced by Scharoun’s Staatsbibliothek in Berlin. The local riverside typology and the beautiful angled roofscape of the Old City prompt a timber framed wrapping around the galleries.
